Title
A cooperative German-Russian initiative for decentralized bio energy systems and sustainable wood based bio-technologies in the forest rich region of Tomsk, Siberia

Programme (project number)
BMBF Innovation Forum (project number: RUS 10/027)

Abstract
The overall aim of the WOOD-TECH initiative is to establish a long-lasting cooperation between Russian and German partners for the development of regional decentralized energy systems. A specific focus lies in the investigation and sustainable mobilization of the large forestry and wood potentials in the Tomsk region and the development of options and pathways for a forest based bio-economy in the region. The fields of action include forestry, bio energy and bio-refinery technologies in a systems approach. The project initiative strongly aims at developing and monitoring implementation processes. The Tomsk oblast proves to be an ideal environment for such cooperation due to the richness in natural resources such as forests and due to the excellence of Russian research institutions in this field. However, the exploitation of natural resources must be managed in a sustainable way to achieve a long-lasting added value and economic hub while maintaining the natural and ecosystem integrity of the region. The presented initiative will assist in the mobilisation and sustainable management of the resources and will contribute to the (economic) development of the region.
